Rockhampton locals are looking forward to the environmentally sustainable employment opportunities that a new aquaculture centre at Rockhampton State High School will bring to their community.
The new facility will enhance subject offerings for the school's students, enabling direct curriculum links to aquatic practices and agriculture science. It is also designed to be shared by the wider Rockhampton region, providing a pathway for training and local fish farm employment opportunities.
The centre is likely to be one of the largest and most technologically advanced centres in an Australia school and its facilities meet industry and commercial aquaculture standards.
Features include an aquaculture room containing 6 individual 10,000L grow out tanks, a wet laboratory and state of-the-art equipment such as automated oxygen control, mechanical drum and bio filters and automatic feeds in climate-controlled tanks.
The $4.8 million (including GST) aquaculture centre is a mutually beneficial addition for Rockhampton State High School students and the community to invest in the education and delivery of sustainable fishing practices. The opening of the centre marks the beginning of a fruitful community partnership and an increase in tourism potential.
