The department takes a regional approach to new schools planning, looking at the best ways to meet future demand across a local network of schools.

The department considers strategies such as enrolment management and expansion of existing schools to ensure existing assets are fully utilised before significant new investments are made.

The selection of new school sites is governed by criteria including, but not limited to, being centrally located to the student catchment area, block shape, environmental impacts, street frontage and future accessibility via pedestrian, cycle and public transport.

The department actively monitors enrolment growth across Queensland to ensure all children, no matter where they live, have access to quality educational facilities. When planning for new schools, the department considers capacity of the existing network, the ability to expand existing schools, growth in the local student population and land availability.
