What is Right to Information?

The 'Right to Information' (RTI) is the Queensland Government's approach to giving access to government-held information.

The Queensland Government has made a commitment to provide access to information held by the government, unless on balance it is contrary to the public interest to provide that information.

Government-held information is released administratively as a matter of course, unless there is a good reason not to, with applications under the Right to Information Act 2009 (Qld) (RTI Act) being necessary only as a last resort. You should request access to government-held information under the Department of Education (department) administrative access scheme in the first instance. For further information about how to access department information, please refer to How do I access information?

As of 1 July 2025, there is a single right of access to and amendment of government-held information under the RTI Act. Find out more about this on the Office of the Information Commissioner Queensland website.
