The 'Right to Information' (RTI) is the Queensland Government's approach to giving the community greater access to information.

The Queensland Government has made a commitment to provide access to information held by the government, unless on balance it is contrary to the public interest to provide that information.

Legislation replacing the Freedom of Information Act 1992 came into effect on 1 July 2009:

The Right to Information aims to make more information available, provide equal access to information across all sectors of the community, and provide appropriate protection for individuals' privacy. However, formal applications under the Right to Information Act 2009 (Qld) and Information Privacy Act 2009 (Qld) should be used only as a last resort. You should seek administrative release of department records in the first instance. For further information on how to access the department’s records, please refer to How do I access information?

More detailed information about RTI can be found at the Queensland Government Right to Information website.
