Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) services are provided to children aged 0 to 12 in the forms of:
- long day care
- limited hours care/occasional care
- state-delivered kindergarten
- outside school hours care
- family day care
- early childhood development programs (ECDPs).
The overall response rate for the 2021 Early Childhood Education and Care Services Census was 99.5%.

The department collects enrolment information by Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) service provider type. This information is available by age of children enrolled at the time of the Early Childhood Education and Care Services Census.
Information is also available by Indigenous status, disability and non-English speaking background (NESB).
