Our occupational therapists support schools to meet the needs of students with disability who require tailored support to do what they need or want to do at school. Occupational therapists enable students to participate in the full-range of school life. This includes learning, interacting with others, self- or personal care, joining in school activities, vocational education and school activities that are meaningful to the student.

You will work collaboratively with teachers, teacher aides, other allied health professionals and specialist support staff to design learning experiences that everyone can actively join in. Your role will include supporting school improvement and providing professional development for staff who support students with disability.

The occupational therapy role in state schools is hugely varied, giving you the opportunity to develop a range of professional skills. You’ll be supporting schools to consider environmental, task and personal characteristics that impact participation in school life. The students you work with are aged 0–18 years and could have disability that impacts their physical, sensory, cognitive or social functioning.

Our service delivery model is participation focused. This means you get to use a range of approaches, work to change hearts and minds, and enable young people to have fulfilling lives during and after their schooling journey.

Occupational therapists provide services to a number of schools. Most of the time, occupational therapists are based in a school with other health professionals. You will receive professional supervision from an occupational therapist.
