​​​​As a cleaner in a school, you have an important role in limiting the risks of infection and disease - students and staff rely on you to maintain high standards of cleanliness.

You will be given access to a copy of the Cleaners Induction Manual (DOCX, 401KB) (DoE employees only) when you begin work. This manual supplements the local induction you will be given at your school. If you have difficulty with any of the information, please ask for help from your supervisor.

You must undergo a Working with Children Check and hold a Blue Card to work in a school.

Role description

Your role description details the range of duties you will be performing as a cleaner in a state school.

Line manager

Your line manager or supervisor will be either the business services manager or the principal of your school.

Employment conditions

Your conditions of employment are derived from the award and the current certified agreement (DoE employees only) for your position.

Various opportunities for professional development are published on the Professional Development website. You will find current opportunities in the Professional Development Calendars under the year and month of interest.

The Cleaners' Chronicle (DoE​ employees only) is a monthly newsletter sent out to all cleaners employed by the department.

Professional interactions

You may have friendly relationships with families that are part of the school community. It is important that you do not discuss students or other school employees with anyone.
