In October 2018, a major fire broke out at Morningside State School which caused extensive damage to the school.

The school re-opened one week later with the assistance and hard work of the entire school community, the Department of Education and Department of Housing and Public Works.

Balmoral State High School, which is located close by, showed outstanding generosity and was able to accommodate students so that teaching and learning could continue with minimal disruption while necessary remedial works happened at Morningside State School.

Areas impacted by the fire included 6 classrooms, the music room, an art room as well as areas adjacent to these spaces which were affected by smoke and water damage.

Three new buildings were placed at the school which provided 6 classrooms in total to accommodate classroom spaces that were lost in the fire.

The Department of Education has been working closely with the school to develop plans for the replacement of the school buildings which were damaged in the fire. This planning has taken into account the damaged buildings and also the future needs of the school.

Once these plans are finalised, construction timeframes will be determined.

As shown below, artificial grass has been placed on the old building footprint to create a play space with handball courts for students to enjoy.
