COVID normal​

Queensland state schools will be operating under COVID normal conditions. However, in some circumstances, schools may be required to implement restrictions. More

Important notices:

  • ​From Friday 9 September 2022, the isolation period for anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 will reduce from 7 days to 5 days, as long as the person does not have any symptoms. More
  • COVID-19 vaccination is no longer required in education settings. More
  • Queensland's declared public health emergency has been extended to 11.59pm, 22 September 2022. More
  • ​Close contacts of a confirmed case of COVID-19 must wear a face mask in schools or early childhood services. More

The following applies to all Queensland state schools and provides guidance to inform decision-making where one or all schools are closed.

Student attendance

All students learning at home.

In some circumstances, children of essential workers and vulnerable children may be permitted onsite. More 

Roll marking

No learning programs provided: closure recorded as a non-school day ( departmental employees only) in OneSchool and rolls not required to be marked. Schools must maintain a record of children of essential workers and vulnerable students who attend school for supervision on non-school days.

Learning program provided: students learning at home recorded as Code F: Off campus activity. Staff attendance (including preservice teachers)

Onsite or offsite. Vulnerable person ( departmental employees only) considerations apply.

Where schools are required to reduce the number of staff on site, this includes preservice teachers, teacher aides, itinerant staff (e.g. therapists) and support staff. Anyone whose work can only be done onsite (e.g. groundscare, cleaning, caring for animals) should attend work where possible. Preservice teachers are to be included in local arrangements for staff on or off school sites.

Staff meetings

Face-to-face staff meetings and professional development should be held via teleconference or online platforms.

Boarding schools

Staff: Onsite. Vulnerable person ( departmental employees only) considerations apply.

Students: Onsite learning for residential students. Learning at home for students who do not reside at the school. Our guidelines outline the operation of state-school-operated boarding facilities (PDF, 464KB) ( departmental employees only) during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Information regarding the operation of non-state boarding schools should be obtained from the individual boarding school.

Parent interviews

Online parent-teacher and enrolment interviews permitted.

Visitors on school sites

Physical distancing should be maintained at all times, especially at drop-off and pick-up time, in the car park, outside classrooms and at the school gate.

Parents and carers

Restricted based on closure conditions. Essential workers and parents or carers of vulnerable children will be permitted on school sites to drop-off or pick-up their children.

Contractors and external workers

Unless access to the school is not permitted, construction and maintenance activities can continue in areas unoccupied by staff and students.

Other visitors, including volunteers, religious instructors and essential health and wellbeing service providers

Restricted or not permitted.

Some essential health and wellbeing service providers may be permitted on school sites where services are not able to be provided online.

Curriculum-based activities

Excursions and camps

Not permitted. Continuation of excursions or camps that are already underway, should be reviewed in light of current Chief Health Officer directions and in consultation with the respective regional office.

School activities (instrumental music programs, ensembles, choirs, incursions, religious instruction, dancing and physical education classes

Not permitted.

Performances, large gatherings and whole-school assemblies

Not permitted.

School sports (intra-school, inter-school and representative school sport programs)

Not permitted.

Distance education students attending a facility for educational purposes

Not permitted at a school site that is closed.

Home education student gatherings

Not permitted at a school site that is closed.
