Early Preneurs make reading yummy

Come and buy your popcorn – Gladstone Central State School students are ready for business

It seems you are never too young to engage an entrepreneurial spirit.

Year 4 students at Gladstone Central State School celebrated Book Week by hosting "Popcorn and a Book" as part of their involvement in Startup Gladstone's Early Preneur program.

The program equips students with real-life entrepreneurial skills.

Digital technologies' teacher Carol Devney explained that the Early Preneurs worked enthusiastically to set up their businesses.

These business savvy kids really know their target audience, hungry students and staff.

"For the past 5 weeks our students have been creating unique popcorn flavours and colours to sell, designing engaging marketing materials and developing clever business ideas like special offers to promote their products," said Carol.

The process has proved creative and delicious with market research including plenty of taste testing.

Being environmentally aware, the students designed sustainable packaging by repurposing materials which would otherwise be discarded.

"We had twelve businesses set up shop, treating visitors to a book reading and popcorn. This is an exciting educational initiative incorporating student innovation, sustainability and learning of real-life skills which are linked to the Australian Curriculum," Carol said.
