School learning isn’t just based in the classroom at Biloela State High School with students proving learning and success can happen in the most unexpected areas when the school took out the top prize at the Rockhampton Agricultural Show last month.

Principal Heather Murry said the students loved the experience as it gave them the opportunity to train in preparing and handling skills for stud cattle showing.

“Students who joined the competition team were in Years 7-10, and aged between 11 and 15 years,” Ms Murry said.

“For most of the 13 kids this was the first time in the Cattle Show Team and their third show.

“We’re thrilled to have won over the other studs and schools that were there,” she said.

Many of the students live in town or on commercial cattle properties and don’t usually have the opportunity to work and show cattle.

The schools’ droughtmaster bull Bilo High Commando, weighing 758kg, bested all the competition to win Supreme Champion Bull.

The student cattle showing team took the bull on the 143km trek north-east from Biloela to Rockhampton to showcase their hard work.

Former Biloela State High School student Candice Rideout joined the student team as she met the height requirement to lead the champion bull.

Ms Rideout said everyone in the team of past and present Biloela students were very proud and excited.

“All the leading training and feeding that the team put in last year has really paid off,” she said.

“The team were so lucky to win so many prizes including Supreme Champion Bull, Grand Champion Bull, Reserve Supreme Champion Female, two Champion Females and firsts in classes,” Ms Rideout said.

The Cattle Show Team teaches Biloela State High students skills in:

  • animal husbandry and handling skills
  • team work
  • communication
  • confidence
  • public speaking.
