A transformative project to tackle cyberbullying

​From brainstorming lyrics to selling CDs, Gayndah State School students have driven the process of creating a wonderful piece of music, which is sure to resonate with many students and teachers

There are some songs that have become anthems of their time. John Lennon’s Imagine beseeched world peace, the 1980s We Are The World aimed to raise awareness of the hunger and starvation in Africa, and then Pharrell Williams bopped us to be Happy. And now, Gayndah State School is imploring students to Think B4U Click.

Students from Gayndah State School are taking a creative approach to cyber safety—writing and recording a song with a strong anti-bullying message.

The students, from Years 4, 5 and 6, worked with singer-songwriter Rachel Koster, teacher Leah Trott and co-teacher Cameron Willis to create the track, titled Think B4 You Click.

Working collaboratively on all aspects of the production, the students determined key messages, brainstormed lyrics and chose the catchy pop/rap style.

Leah said the song is inspired by the increasingly pervasive presence of the internet.

'There is a growing demand for our students to be knowledgeable about cyber-safe strategies,' Leah said.

'They want it to have an uplifting message about being ‘upstanders' (someone who takes action against bullying behaviours), not bystanders.'

In addition to its moral imperative, Leah describes the project as transformative for many of the students.

'Some students were surprised at their singing abilities,' she said. 'And some students who usually have difficulty interacting socially, shone when given this opportunity.'

'Their awareness of cyber safety has definitely been heightened, and it’s extremely encouraging to know they are developing the skills and strategies to combat cyberbullying.'
